Sam Edelman on the Two Legends He Admires in the Shoe Business + Where AI Misses the Mark
The founder sounded off on a range of topics in FN's August issue.
In FN’s August issue, Sam Edelman unveiled his growth strategy, including an ambitious men’s footwear launch.
The veteran shoe executive and consummate brand builder also weighed in on a variety of hot topics, including the people he admires most in the shoe business and the perils of AI, especially when it comes to design.
“I’ve used the same system for 50 years. We [travel] to our favorite cities and look at fashion first, and that gets me excited. We do a crazy number of shoes, materials and designs every season. We have more need today because we have huge tables to fill in the department stores, and we have our own stores. The business is bigger than ever. But it’s the same system I’ve used since I was at Esprit.”

“AI is great for research, it’s great to find statistical things, but I don’t believe in it for design. I’m searching for more free-hand sketchers. In fact, I want to cut back on Computer Aided Design [CAD] by 50 percent. There’s a great place for AI in the world, but can it find the soul of a woman? I don’t know.”
