How Burger King Drank Wendy’s Milk Shake

Once BK got back to the basics, it started winning

By Mark Ritson

The future of brands gets decided here. Join the industry’s top marketers at Brandweek for the ideas, insights, and connections shaping what’s next. Get your ticket.

Remember when Wendy’s had its shit together? The U.S. burger brand with the square-patties spent decades in the dusty brand wilderness, but then suddenly it started smashing it.

It started with product truth. Fresh, never frozen beef. Not a tagline invented in a workshop but an actual operational fact, hammered home relentlessly while McDonald’s kept defrosting.

Wendy’s Twitter account started roasting anyone who wandered into its mentions, and a teenager asking how many retweets he needed for free nuggets became, briefly, the most retweeted post in history .

Finally there was the big structural bet: breakfast, launched nationally , and backed up with proper media money .

And it worked. In 2021 Wendy’s overtook Burger King to become America’s second biggest burger chain for the first time. Let’s be honest, the brand Wendy’s deposed for that place deserved everything it got, with extra fries. Because the Burger King of that era was the industry’s most florid case of AADD: Advertising Attention Deficit Disorder.

A subservient chicken that did whatever you typed; a masked plastic King with a fixed grin sneaking into strangers’ beds ; an invitation to sacrifice ten Facebook friends for a free Whopper; a marriage proposal to McDonald’s . And then there was the infamous tweet: “Women belong in the kitchen.”

Award juries loved those campaigns as much as consumers ignored them.

I’m not saying these were bad campaigns. They weren’t campaigns at all. Just brief, distracted, tactical assaults. Each used a different strategy, a different tone, a different showreel. The only consistent thing about Burger King’s advertising was its inconsistency.

Worse, while the ads chased Lions, the rest of the marketing mix was left to rot faster than that infamous Whopper. The menu bloated, and the restaurants aged.

Burger King ignored positioning, product, place, and price, all while promotion did interpretive dance moves on a cocktail of everchanging insights.

“For years, we’ve been spreading ourselves too thin across too many messages with mixed results,” said then-CEO Jose Cil in 2021, who actually appeared to be dizzy as he said it.

And then, something remarkable happened. Burger King stepped back, got it together, and kept it there.

“ Reclaim the Flame ” began in 2022. A new investment of $400 million. More than $150 million poured into advertising firepower, and $250 million remodelling tired restaurants. It measured the horizon in years instead of quarters.

Burger King told Wall Street upfront that the plan would dilute earnings for two years before paying back. This is what a real turnaround looks like: money now, glory later, analysts sniffy.

And just one brand platform. “You Rule” launched in late 2022 , fronted by a Whopper jingle so catchy and so annoying that America begged for mercy, while singing along.

Four years later, it’s still running. Two decades of campaign promiscuity finally ended in settled, effective campaign monogamy.

And, crucially, the rest of the Ps were invited to the party.

The Whopper itself was reformulated this year with a better bun, better mayo, better packaging, and backed with a guarantee promising a free burger if your order isn’t right.

Hundreds of remodels, with a commitment to a fully modern estate by 2028.

One coherent value construct instead of coupon mania. And the best bit, operations run by the single greatest executor in the recent history of QSR: Tom Curtis. He’s so good, he wears a cape to work.

And, through the window, did you get a whiff of the delicious, savory aroma of impact?

Burger King has grown U.S. same-store sales for five consecutive quarters now, the latest a whopping 8.5% jump.

Last Friday, it finally overtook Wendy’s to reclaim the number two spot it lost six years earlier.

Meanwhile, Wendy’s posted a sixth straight quarterly decline, this time down 7%. It withdrew its outlook, halved its dividend, and welcomed a third CEO in three years. The brand that taught the industry about consistency forgot its own crucial message, and spent 2024 explaining surge pricing to a furious internet instead.

Don’t expect a tussle down the track either. This is not a column about two evenly matched brands now barging into each other for the silver burger medal. Burger King’s four-year plan went beyond four years. The image program runs to 2028, and the restaurant strategy stretches well into the next decade.

Wendy’s cannot discount its way out of this one.

It needs what its rival needed in 2021: An honest diagnosis, a new strategy, all the Ps harnessed, and patience to fund and execute several unglamorous years of change. And if Wendy’s needs a case study to inspire their transformation, it can refer to Burger King.
