The Richemont-owned brand will open “Immersion” at the Museo Marino Marini in Florence on Sept. 10, marking 100 years since the opening of its first boutique in Piazza San Giovanni. The 10-day showcase will allow guests to follow Panerai’s journey from family workshop to open sea. “Our heritage at Panerai is much more than an historical narrative; it is the foundation of our technical expertise and the North Pole star that guides our future vision,” said Emmanuel Perrin, CEO of Panerai, in a statement. “With ‘Immersion,’ we tell our story from a different perspective, shifting the focus from the past to how the Maison’s spirit expresses itself today.” From workshop to abyss The exhibition returns the watchmaker to the museum’s crypt a decade after its 2016 “Dive Into Time” show. It opens on the family business that took shape in Florence from 1860, when the Panerai family ran the Orologeria Svizzera boutique alongside G. Panerai & Figlio, which built professional instruments for the Italian Navy. Visitors then move into a secret military workshop before the path descends into what the brand calls “the abyss,” a space of “pressure, darkness and silence,” before the exhibition’s next stop, which documents accounts from modern adventurers in polar, jungle and ocean environments. The specifications Panerai developed for the Navy, with luminescence, water resistance, robust construction and an extended power reserve, stayed a military secret until 1993, when the maison released its first watches to the public, among them the first 44mm Luminor. Richemont acquired the brand in 1997, and Panerai has manufactured its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel facility since 2002. Opening Sept. 10 and running through Sept. 19, “Immersion” will host attendees daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Museo Marino Marini in Piazza San Pancrazio.
