Lack of Demand for High-Heat Sneaker Styles Could Spark Concern for Jordan and More Big Brands

Some discounts on new Jordan Brand retros in the resale market suggest a demand issue, with eyes now on "high heat" launches in August for back-to-school.

Summer 2026 could be the start of a sneakerhead slog, according to Needham analyst Tom Nikic.

Recent resale data suggests that the “ Jordan Brand is facing a difficult demand environment,” Nikic wrote in a research note Monday, noting that six retro Jordan Brand launches in July have failed to trade currently at a resale premium currently, despite the brand having pulled back on supply in recent years.

Even worse, the Needham analyst said that there are a lot of sneakers being released in August for back-to-school (bts), but “August seems off to a tough start.” He noted 25 potential “high heat” sneaker launches this month, up from 20 a year ago. But three of the five Jordan launches that have been released are “trading at discounts in the resale market.”

And even worse, although there are a lot of launches still to come, “it doesn’t seem to us like there are many “must have” styles — no ‘Mind’ sneakers , no Dunks — which could result in a challenging back-to-school season overall.”

Nikic’s monthly sneaker-launch tracker is one way to assess demand for the sneaker category by tracking the performance of collectible kicks. “Though they represent just a portion of the industry, when the industry is performing well, we usually see a large number of ‘high heat’ sneaker launches,” he noted. High heat sneakers are defined as those that sell out completely in primary distribution channels and then go on to sell at a premium on resale platforms, such as StockX and GOAT.

July saw just seven sneaker releases, down from 21 a year ago. Those seven sold out quickly and began trading at premiums in the secondary market, he said. Six of these “high” heat kicks were from Nike, and one from Vans, which was its much talked about Old Skool Souvenir in multiple colorways.

As examples of premium pricing, Nicik’s data indicates the Old Skool sold for $125, but then rose by 32 percent to $165 on the resale platform. Nike’ Glove ’98 “Black/White” had an original price of $170 that spiked 126 percent to $384 at resale, while its Mind 001 “Indigo Burst and Hyper Punch” sneaker sold initially at $95 and then jumped 82 percent to $173 at resale.

In contrast, the Jordan 4 women’s “Coconut Milk,” listed at $220, is selling at a 35 percent discount to $142 in the resale market, while the Jordan 4 Kids “Sweet Beet”, originally at $165, is priced at $107 at resale, representing a 35 percent discount.

“With a lack of meaningful innovation and ‘buzz’ in the sneakerhead market, coupled with less-than-ideal macro conditions, it seems clear to us that the sneaker market is challenged at the moment,” the analyst concluded.

Outside of exclusive sneaker releases, a survey from AlixPartners in partnership with the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) last month found that consumer demand for bts footwear remains strong, but that inflation and higher shoe prices could be putting pressure on both the size and share of the wallet earmarked for footwear. One of the key data points found that 50.3 percent said they would buy one all-purpose sneaker instead of separate specialized pairs, and another data metric found 39 percent focusing on a shoe that can move from school to activities.

And at last week’s FFANY Market Week , there was optimism due to fresh fashion styles and a “great start” to bts. However, while sneakers were still in the line of sight for retail buyers, much of the focus and excitement was for fashion newness in the market, with standouts including ballet flats, Mary Janes, jellies and split-toe shoes.

Only $24.99 for one year!
