Meghan Markle accessorized her Greta Constantine dress with a tribute to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana at the David Foster Foundation 40th Anniversary Celebration in Victoria, British Columbia, on Friday night.
The As Ever founder wore an asymmetrical dress with a one-shoulder caped neckline and floor-length skirt with a flowing train that trailed Markle on the arrival carpet. The look was a continuation of the “With Love, Meghan” host’s quiet luxury style bent she’s channeled since relocating to Montecito, Calif., in 2020.

Accessories for the Duchess of Sussex’s look were mostly minimal, save for a simple gold bracelet and her delicate butterfly-shaped diamond-and-sapphire earrings, which previously belonged to Princess Diana .

Unlike some of her famous pieces like her Collingwood pearl drop earrings , Princess Diana’s diamond-and-sapphire butterfly earrings are a rarer find from the late British royal’s jewelry collection. Princess Diana wore her butterfly suite during a May 1986 trip to the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Coincidentally, the event Prince Harry and Markle attended on Friday night also took place in British Columbia, adding even more sentimental weight to the jewelry choice the Duchess of Sussex made to accessorize her Greta Constantine dress.
Over the course of her eight-year marriage to Prince Harry, Markle has worn several jewelry pieces that previously belonged to Princess Diana. Dating to the couple’s May 2018 wedding, when Markle wore a ring with an aquamarine gemstone that was gifed to the late royal by Lucia Flecha de Lima.
The diamonds that comprise Markle’s engagement ring also hail from Princess Diana’s suite of jewels, along with the Cartier gold tank Française watch Markle has made part of her signature accessory choices.
Such sentimental sartorial touches are nothing new for members of the British royal family. Like Markle, Kate Middleton regularly wears pieces of jewelry that belonged to Princess Diana for high-profile public occasions. The Princess of Wales was the recipient of Princess Diana’s sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring, and often wears the Collingwood pearl drop earrings, accessories Middleton sported in her 40th birthday portrait.
